Just for Parents

From the Principal’s Pen:

Dear Skyline Parents and Students,

Welcome to Skyline!  We strive to make our school Superior in every way – staff, students, parents, academics, and after school activities!  We believe in a well-rounded educational experience and are proud of the variety of supports, clubs, and sports we offer.  In fact, our Federal and State school rating for 2008-2009 was SUPERIOR !

Academically, our math program offers an advanced path of Pre-Algebra in 6th grade, Algebra I in 7th grade and Algebra II in 8th grade allowing students to earn high school credit. Our English Language Arts program integrates reading/writing in all subjects with coordinated strategies to apply learned skills. We teach students the question/answer relationship to better develop a response. We teach them to write text-based answers using a format that includes support. We focus our questions on higher-level thinking skills such as inferencing and synthesizing. Our science program offers hands-on labs from the Smithsonian curriculum to teach students content and procedures. Our Accelerated Reader program provides daily silent reading at student’s independent level. The practice has promoted an increase in our DSTP scores at every grade level since its implementation. Our departments fine-tune instruction to meet the needs of our students using data from DSTP testing. We are excited and proud of Skyline’s rigorous curriculum.

In addition, Skyline offers a wide array of academic and co-curricular activities to serve as an outlet for students' interests and abilities. Individuals and organizations representing our school have won a wide range of awards for their efforts. Competitions such as Stock Market, Solar Cars, Numerix, Math League, Odyssey of the Mind, Geography Bee, Business Professionals of America, Science Olympiad, and Spelling Bee challenge our students in a fun and meaningful way.  Clubs such as Book Club, Newspaper, Student Council, Yearbook, and Drama provide skills oriented training and team building.  Sports such as Field Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Track and Wrestling encourage wellness, teamwork, and excitement.

We also connect with our community through The Hockessin-Pike Creek Rotary Club who sponsor a Student of the Month program which recognizes outstanding students’ accomplishments. Our annual Hoops for Hearts and Relay for Life events donate thousands of dollars to help fight heart disease and cancer as well as teach our students about giving back and supporting our neighbors.

These accomplishments highlight a variety of exemplary programs and show the level of commitment on the part of our staff and parents in channeling students’ talents in positive activities to build self-esteem.

Enjoy the Skyline experience!

Sincerely,

Ms. Basara

A Message from the School Nurse:

The first few weeks of school are always busy caring for students and staff with illnesses and injuries as well as reviewing all health records and immunizations. All students entering Red Clay schools for the first time must have a current Mantoux/PPD TB skin test or risk assessment questionnaire completed.  I will be reviewing vaccination records throughout the year. If I receive no response to notifications concerning vaccinations, those students will be medically excluded from school until proper arrangements have been met.

Emergency cards are also important tools for the school nurse. If you have not returned your child’s card please do so as soon as possible.  If it has gotten lost, a new one can be obtained in the main office. Please update any changes to this information (such as new phone numbers) as they occur throughout the year by contacting me.  My office number is 454-3414.

If your child needs to take medication during school hours, please send the medication in the original container with a note stating who, when and how much to give.  If the medication is a controlled substance such as Ritalin or Adderall, I prefer that it be brought in by a responsible adult.  If your child has asthma, Delaware State law does allow them to carry their inhalers and self-administer.  If you feel uncomfortable with self-administration, the inhaler can be left in my office.  Children with bee sting allergies requiring an Epi-pen must leave the pen in the nurse’s office.

Lastly, if your child develops any contagious or communicable condition, such as strep throat, lice, scabies or chicken pox, please notify me. Please keep child home if he/she has vomited within the last 8 hours. Your child should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school after an illness.  We are concerned for the well-being or your child, as well as the other students and staff.

Please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns.

A Note About Fire Drills and Lock Downs:

For security purposes, Skyline students and staff practice safe procedures with fire drills and a lock down drills.

Fire drills involve an alarm sounding and students exiting the building in an orderly fashion.  Teachers take attendance to be sure all students are accounted for.  Administrators time each drill to assure all students are out of the building within 3 minutes.

Lock downs drills involve students staying in their room.  For example, students may need to remain in their classroom if there was an intruder in the building.  Students learn the procedures from their teachers and then practice them when they hear the coded message.  Designated people check each area of the school to be sure all students are safely in a classroom.  Once all students and staff are accounted for, the drill is concluded.  Administrators analyze the process and alert staff on ways to improve.

We practice so that we will all be safe should an emergency arise.  Practice is the key to avoiding mistakes.  Practice will give students the confidence to make the right decision in an emergency.

Discussions at home to reinforce the importance of practicing fire drills and lock downs would be appreciated.

Lost and Found:

Has your child come home and lost his shoe?  His coat?  Her books?  Please have them check out our labeled containers in the cafeteria near the bathrooms.  All lost and found items are there.  Unclaimed items are donated to charity at Christmas and the end of the year.
